About me

Hey there! My name is Summer Blanco (she/they) and I'm a 1st year PhD student in the Plant Biology department at UGA. I completed my Bachelor of Science at the California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, CA. I also spent some time at Michigan State University doing a postbac. (If you're interested in any of these institutions, please reach out!)

I see myself as an early career Plant evolutionary biologist. I'm really excited about the evolution of flowering plants, and more specifically their morphology and color.

I’m also really passionate about science communication and diversifying the STEM higher education community. As a queer, latinx person, I have spent a lot of time reflecting on my own experiences in higher education, which has naturally led to several leadership and advocacy roles during my academic career.

Outside of the academy, I love roller skating, swimming, live music, and a good oat milk latte.
